What is Your Happiness Quotient?

Do you sometimes feel that with all the negativity in the world - what comes at us via the media as well as other people - that it’s hard to remain positive?  Now I’m not going to dismiss that we’re living in challenging times, however we choose how we think and feel about ourselves, our lives, our work, and our world.    
 
Next time you’re feeling down, try this quick and easy technique to identify how much of it is coming from external sources - and what to do about it:

  1.  Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a deep breath (after you do this a few times you can do it within seconds anywhere - standing up, eyes open, etc.).

  2.  Imagine that you have your own personal TV screen in front of you that will give you answers to anything you ask. 

  3.  On your screen visualize a gauge on that goes from zero to 100.  (It can look like a thermometer, speedometer, or a digital readout - whatever works for you.). 

  4.  Ask your gauge, from zero to 100, how much of the energy that is causing you to feel down, drained, tired, etc. is not yours, and you will immediately get a answer.  Don’t think about it, analyze it, or be concerned about whose energy it is.

  5.  Next, have the intention to release it - out of your physical body and out of your energy field that surrounds your body.  (Imagining a grounding cord between the base of your spine and the center of the earth is a simple tool for releasing unwanted energy.)

  6.  Finally - and most importantly - choose what energy - or combination of energies - you would like to fill back up with (i.e. abundance, excitement, fun, joy, enthusiasm, clarity, etc.).  As you imagine those energies permeating every cell of your body and your energy field, notice how much lighter you feel!

Great Book to Help You Raise Your Happiness Level
 
One of the best books I’ve read recently is Happy for No Reason, 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out by Marci Shimoff with Carol Kline.  The book discusses our “happiness set-point” - what others are calling our “happiness quotient” - indicating that 50% of our general level of happiness is based on our genetics, but that the other 50% is learned - meaning we can change it if we choose.  This book has a myriad of “Happiness Action Steps” - practical ways to become happier from the inside out, along with stories of the Happy 100 - people who live happy lives, many of whom have lived through tragedy or come from very humble means.Living Happier Techniques
 
Are You Complaining or Solution Focused?
 
Put a jar somewhere handy.  Every time you catch yourself complaining, put a quarter in the jar.  As you listen to the quarter enter the jar, focus on the solution, or any positive thought.  You may be surprised at how often you’re paying the jar in the beginning.  Do something that makes you feel good with the money that accumulates in the jar - such as donate it to your favorite charity.
 
Who Are You Hangin’ Around?
 
Recently I’ve heard the same concept from three different sources (including the book mentioned above):  Your general level of happiness is based on the 5 people you spend the most time around.  Think about it.  Stop and make a list of the 5 people you’re around the most.  Are they usually positive and upbeat, ready to discuss interesting things and do fun stuff?  Or are they usually complaining and negative?  Another measurement is: Do you feel better, lighter, happier, more uplifted after spending time with that person (by phone or in person)?  Or do you feel worse, heavier, depressed, discouraged?  Really makes you think about who you choose spend your time with, doesn’t it!
 

Whooz Hangin’ Around You?
 

When you get together with people, is the first thing you mention is the lousy weather, the bad economy, or the war?  How about choosing to start all your interactions out on a positive note?  Ask your conversation companion what’s the best thing that’s happened to them recently, then share the best thing that’s happened to you.  Be the first to compliment people or share an uplifting comment or story.
 
Choose To Be Happy
 
The bottom line is that we can choose to be happy and in gratitude about being alive during these dynamic and exciting times.  We are alive in a time of great awakening to the power we have to create our own realities and live freely from the full expression of who we are.
