What Is A Mystic?

December 11th, 2007

The word mystic often brings up thoughts of magic and supernatural elements.  The true definition of a mystic is someone who practices mysticism, which is also quite often misunderstood.

A mystic is a person who is seeking the truth about life and its meaning.  A mystic believes there is more to life than what exists on the physical plane.

They believe that the meaning and purpose of life go beyond our meager existence in the day-to-day world.  Work, errands and other daily things just are a small speck in the overall picture of our existence and mystics seek to find out what the larger meaning is.

Mystics are very deep thinkers who are always trying to reason and see beyond what is obvious.  They often dig deep into their own minds to try to discern the reality from the illusions.

Mystics are not trying to live beyond this life, but simply to make this life better.  They believe by finding the true meaning of life they can live as they were meant to.  They do not believe that they are superior, just that they understand better that there is more to life than how most people are living.

At heart a mystic is a very curious person.  They are always asking questions and trying to discover the answers.  They leave nothing unasked and they are willing to take whatever answers they find.

Mystics are often misunderstood because they usually live life much different than the rest of the world.  They are not as concerned with the daily grind as most.  They are more in tune with their soul and with the larger picture.

Mystics are constantly on that inner journey to discover themselves.  They are always trying to get more from life than just what appears on the surface.

Becoming a mystic involves some very detailed inner work.  Mystics first have to realize that there is more meaning to life than what we already know.  They have to take the journey towards discovery and finding that meaning.  These things involve going beyond traditional thinking and being able to look at life and the world around you in a different way.

At the very core a mystic is someone who is always learning and wants to learn everything possible about life before their journey in this life is over.  A mystic is a life-long learner whose main goal is to figure out the purpose of this life.
