The Debate On Alternative Medicine vs Traditional Medicine

May 7th, 2007

Alternative medicine consists of medical practices that are not backed by traditional medicine.  They include many practices, like Reiki, acupuncture and color therapy.  Alternative medicine is often considered to be alternative because the practices are not backed by science like traditional medicine practices.

Alternative medicine is also not generally regulated like traditional medicine.  Some forms of alternative medicine are slightly regulated because they involve practices that fall under the jurisdiction of certain governmental agencies, like acupuncture, which involves needles and can be regulated for health code reasons.  However, the use of herbal medications, for example, is not regulated.

There is a growing interest in alternative medicine.  People are noticing what a huge business health care is becoming.  They are seeing that the driving force behind traditional medicine is no longer keeping people healthy, but making money.  This has led many people to avoid buying into the traditional methods and instead they are opting for alternative methods.

People also feel more in control when they choose alternative medicine.  They are given more choices and they are able to be more hands on in their treatments.

Of course, this new interest in alternative medicine is not going over well with traditional medical practitioners.  It means a loss of money when patients choose alternative over them.  There is a lot of criticism against alternative medicine.

Alternative medicine is often looked at as amateur medicine.  The fact is that many alternative medicine practices have been around much longer than traditional medicine.  Many practices in traditional medicine have their roots in alternative medicine.  Alternative medicine is not scientifically proven, though, and that is often the main argument against it.  There is a concern over safety since most alternative medicine is not regulated.

Many traditional medicine advocates say alternative medicine hurts more then it helps.  They say alternative medicine can not help those who suffer from severe problems and by avoiding traditional medicine these people are only hurting themselves and allowing their problems to get worse.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people who have been using alternative medicine for quite some time and are healthy and happy with it.  They are not suffering, but living a great life.

When it comes to the debate between alternative medicine and traditional medicine, the bottom line is that patients have the right to make their own choice.  If they are getting what they want from alternative medicine then they should stick with it.

It is not up the government or doctors to say what is the right or wrong choice.  Science does not have all the answers and the best argument against alternative medicine is that it is not scientifically proven.  That is not a strong enough argument to counter all the positive results people have gotten from alternative medicine.
