Synchronicity Or Coincidence?

February 12th, 2008

Synchronicity is a term developed by psychologist Carl Jung to describe the occurrence of two events that occur at the same time in a meaningful manner.  Synchronicity is similar to a coincidence, but the differentiating factor is that the events do not just happen but that they are somehow connected in an underlying manner.

The idea of synchronicity explains away coincidence.  This is Jung’s reasoning behind the idea.  He felt that many times what were perceived as coincidence were really events that had some underlying common connection.  They did not occur randomly, but were part of larger picture of meaningful events.

Explaining synchronicity is a little difficult in scientific terms.  It is not able to be tested by scientific means which usually means that science will not accept the idea.

It is hard to always explain the relationship between two different events.  Sometimes it can be a stretch to perceive how the events could be related at all.  This leads some to believe that synchronicity is nothing more than coincidence.

There is a large group of thought, though, that believe there is no such thing as coincidence and that everything happens for a reason.  One thing happens so that later another may happen and it is all part of the course of life.  This group believes in synchronicity above that of mere coincidence.

Counter arguments, though, suggest synchronicity is just a matter of over thinking.  They believe that when people try to analyze something they may see connections that are not real or are not logical.  They create their own reality which is neither scientific nor provable.

Since synchronicity is hard to prove in a scientific manner, maybe the truth of the matter will never be known.  However, there was a study done at Princeton University that sought to explain synchronicity.  It looked at thought patterns and how they occur in random order.  This study suggested that perhaps it is possible for two events to occur in a meaningful underlying manner.  The study, though, has been unable to be duplicated and therefore is not held with high esteem.

The idea of synchronicity is one that many people are drawn to.  It may require a lot of thought and it may seem complex, but then so is the idea of coincidence.  Maybe being able to explain why things happen as they do is something we need to satisfy our human nature.

Synchronicity, therefore, satisfies our natural human instincts.
