Living in a Dream
October 30th, 2008Everyone dreams. Not everyone remembers their dreams, but everyone dreams.
So, what exactly is a dream and why do we dream? After all, if everyone dreams, dreams must have some significance for us.
Dreams have been defined as the sequences of thoughts we have when we are asleep. They come to us at a time when our conscious minds and physical senses aren’t interpreting our surroundings, and the mind “chatter” we experience when we are awake is silenced. This makes it possible to obtain, and hear, information from beyond the physical. Dreams may come from our intuition, our sub-conscious, the spiritual realm and/or other planes of existence. So, dreams can reveal hidden beliefs, unfulfilled desires, and behaviors that aren’t serving us well.
A dream may show us where we’re at in various aspects of our life. If we pay attention to our dreams and learn to interpret their meaning, they will give us a great deal of information we can use to improve our lives. Some people believe that dreams show us what we are in the process of manifesting, good or bad. If our dreams indicate that we are manifesting things we don’t want, we can use that information to change course before those things show up in the physical.
Physical events can affect our dreams. For example, if you eat a large meal right before going to sleep, you may find that you have more nightmares and disturbing dreams. Other things that can impact your dreams include stress and health challenges.
While dreams may hold a number of messages for us, we have to be careful not to take them too literally. Most of the information in dreams is symbolic. The people, objects and situations in our dreams don’t usually refer to people, objects and situations in the physical world. Dreams are usually all about the dreamer.
There are seven primary types of dreams that have been defined.
1. Day Dreams
A day dream is the only type of dream that doesn’t take place while you are asleep. If you are daydreaming, though, you are not in a fully awake state, either. In fact, when you are daydreaming you are in a trance state. Depending on how deeply you are involved in the day dream, and how aware you are of the physical world around you, you may be in a fairly mild trance state or a much deeper one. Essentially, this is a type of self-hypnosis.
2. Lucid Dreams
Lucid dreaming refers to being aware that you are dreaming while in the midst of the dream. Sometimes, you might be able to alter the direction of the dream while you are lucidly dreaming. For example, if you have a recurring nightmare and you are aware you are dreaming, try changing what’s happening to something positive.
3. Recurring Dreams
Recurring dreams may repeat themselves as often as every night or multiple times per night, or they may only show up occasionally. If the content of the dream is substantially the same, it is a recurring dream. Recurring dreams usually indicate a problem or issue in your life that has not been resolved.
4. Nightmares
Dreams that are disturbing, frightening and even horrifying are referred to as nightmares. Pay attention to your nightmares because they can indicate problems in your life that require some action on your part.
5. Healing Dreams
Healing dreams may provide information that you can use to alleviate existing health problems. On the other hand, healing dreams about health problems you don’t have may indicate that you need to make a change in your life in order to maintain good health and avoid a particular illness or disease.
6. Prophetic Dreams
While most types of dreams are all about the dreamer, prophetic dreams give the dreamer information that allows them to foretell the future. The future the prophetic dreamer sees may be about the dreamer’s future and/or it may be about other people and events in their future.
7. Epic Dreams
Epic dreams are dreams remembered in vivid detail that may be remain in the memory for years. These are dreams that have a profound impact on the dreamer. Epic dreams are rare and most people don’t experience them.
In order to understand the messages and guidance coming from your dreams, it is important to remember the dreams and learn dream symbolism.
