Digging Into Taoism
March 3rd, 2008Taoism is the term used to describe a variety of Chinese religious and philosophical traditions and ideals. Taoism is based upon a core belief of the Three Jewels of the Tao, which are love, moderation and humility. Tao focuses on non-action, spontaneity, humanism and emptiness.
The traditional Taoists are polytheistic, which means they worship multiple gods or spirits. However, Taoism is not a unified religion and therefore beliefs vary greatly from sector to sector.
Some believe there are three main categories of Taoism. There is philosophical Taoism which is based upon the texts of Tao Te Ching and Zhuangzi. There is religious Taoism which is rooted in the Zhang Daoling of the Han Dynasty. Then there is the folk Taoism which is based on the Chinese folk religion.
Despite the ununified core of Taoism, there are some common threads that bind them all. The main principles of Taoism and the Three Jewels of Tao are important no matter the type of Taoism.
The principles of Taoism emphasize the idea of being one with nature and the flow of the universe. The flow of energy is very important as well. Taoism also holds being moral and virtuous as important principles.
The main concept of Taoism is called wu wei. This means without action. It is basically the idea that if a person becomes one with their inner power they can make things happen without actually doing anything.
The Three Jewels are another common ideal. The three concepts of love, moderation and humility play an important role in Taoism. These concepts help guide a person to live their day to day life in a manner that is respectful and honorable to Taoism.
Energy plays a large role in Taoism. Energy is something natural given off by the earth and all things. People have energy flowing through their body and when that energy is disrupted or otherwise not flowing correctly it is the root of problems, both physical and spiritual. Through practicing the ideals of Taoism a person can help to keep that energy balanced and working properly.
Taoism is often mixed with many other forms of Chinese beliefs. The basic ideas, though, remain the common thread that makes up Taoism and separates it from other religions or beliefs.
The basic idea of Taoism is to become one with the energy force of the earth, to help others and to live a natural and wholesome life. Taoism is about keeping a high moral value to life and striving to always work towards discovering the higher nature of life.
